What Does Cataract Surgery Involve?
Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacity, which is referred to as a cataract. Metabolic changes in the lens fibers over time lead to the development of the cataract and loss of transparency, causing impairment or loss of vision. During cataract surgery, a patient’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens implant.
Cataract surgery is generally performed in an outpatient setting in a surgical center or hospital, using local anesthesia, and usually causing little to no discomfort to the patient. Well over 90% of operations are successful in restoring useful vision, with a low complication rate. Minimally invasive, small incision, no-stitch procedures with quick post-op recovery has become the standard of care in cataract surgery all over the world.
Signs and symptoms of cataracts include:
- Clouded, blurred or dim vision
- Increasing difficulty with vision at night
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Seeing “halos” around lights
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions
- Fading or yellowing of colors
- Double vision in a single eye
If you are struggling with any of the above symptoms, it may be time to consider cataract surgery. Call 248-241-6537 if you would like to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Garretson.
